TEAM HL SET TO HIKE FOR HOMELESS WITH ST BASILS
Harris Lamb has signed up for its latest charity initiative, with a four-strong team limbering up for a 23-mile hike to raise money to support young people at risk of homelessness in the West Midlands.
The St Basils Hike For Homeless will take place on June 8th, with Tom Morley, Rob Pinks, Simon Hawley and Dominic Wilson having committed to the longest route, which will see them walk 23 miles through Abergavenny in South Wales.
St Basils works with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, helping almost 4,000 young people per year across the West Midlands region with specific services in Birmingham, Coventry, Evesham, Leamington Spa, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the Wyre Forest.
Tom said: “This is an important charity within the region and having supported it before, we were keen to get involved again in helping to raise funds and awareness of St Basils’ work to provide essential support to young people who are either homeless or at risk of being so.
“Every year, the charity houses up to 1,000 young people in one of its supported accommodation schemes, with some of those supported having children of their own. By providing a range of outreach, advice, support, accommodation, employability and engagement services to help young people regain the stability they need to rebuild their lives, gain skills, and secure employment, St Basils aims to help them successfully break the ‘cycle of homelessness’ so that they can go on to experience a bright, fulfilling future.
“These services and schemes obviously come at a cost, so we are hoping that this event, along with the others that the charity has organised to help raise awareness and funds, helps to boost St Basils’ coffers to enable them to continue to provide them,” he added.
Team HL have, as usual, set themselves the challenge of tackling the longest and most difficult of three hike options, the Sugar Loaf route. Expected to take around 10 hours to complete, the 23-mile route includes three hills of 468m, 341m and 596mm and includes Skirrid and Twyn yr Allt.
Tom added: “We are all pretty regular hikers and we’ve been promised that Sugar Loaf provides a spectacular backdrop to the market town of Abergavenny with panoramic views across South Wales, the Brecon Beacons and into south-west England from its peak, so we are hoping for good weather and to be well rewarded by the views for our efforts!”
